Many young fathers face barriers to the role they play in their children’s lives. Young Dads Collective was set up to tackle this issue as well as reduce poverty and isolation experienced by young fathers. Established by the Family and Childcare Trust, it harnesses the skills and experience of fathers aged under 25 to provide consultancy, training and research services to organisations keen to do more to include young fathers like them. Many join from troubled backgrounds and the majority have had a criminal background or been part of a gang. They are trained and supported to deliver services, which have included creating a “big brother” scheme for young fathers leaving custody at Oakhill Secure Training Centre in Milton Keynes. The project has also had a significant impact on its members, who have contributed to major policy forums and reports on fatherhood, and represented their peers in the media. Of the eight members of the council, all of whom were long-term unemployed, four have secured full-time jobs and two have found part-time work.
